This year there will be many homeschoolers graduating all over Texas. It’s exciting to see how things have grown in the homeschool community over the last 30+ years. Thirty years ago, in 1987, the first graduation in the Houston / Gulf Coast area, and one of the first homeschool graduations in Texas took place. Hank Tate was the president of the South East Texas Home School Association (SETHSA) when they put together the first homeschool graduation. Hank shared recently, “There were only five graduates and we had the graduation at Spring Branch Community Church. Maybe thirty people attended. Charlie Hartland, a homeschool dad who was a Texas Legislator was the speaker.” Hank & Jeannie Tate are still serving homeschoolers through graduations. The original graduation passed from SETHSA to the Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA) after seven years and has continued for 23 years to be the premier graduation, copied by many others, and serving all homeschoolers in the greater Houston area.
Again, in 2018, HCYA is providing a homeschool graduation for any homeschoolers. Most graduations are closed to specific groups. HCYA serves all homeschoolers. If you’re in the greater Houston area and have a student graduation checkout the HCYA graduation.
